What's Your Cash Position?

How much of your net worth do you hold as FRN's in possession (i.e.not at the bank)?

It can be other fiat paper also and you can enter the amount that you are looking to accumulate even if you haven't yet, or what you like to have in reserve even if it dwindles.

My cash position? I maintain that cash, a.k.a. FRNs, is fiat paper and will some day return to its inherent value, which is zero.

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it!

Do my 400-500lbs of pennies count? How bout my wooden nickel collection? My pockets have holes in them, cash just flows through LOL!

Fullpower 12-07-2007 08:37 PM

Cash... You mean Federal reserve notes?

Generally I dont keep more than fifteen hundred or so in my pockets. I dont like to leave the house with less than a thousand or so, but I am running a bit low this time of year, bought a few Birth-week presents for wife, and christmas stuff for the kids have taken a bit of the cash supply.
It is always a good idea to keep a few thousand in cash stashed somewhere around the office, in case a transportation issue crops up at an odd time.
If you have money on deposit at a "bank" you may wish to reconsider your strategy given the current finance/economic situation.

Roughly 2 1/2 ounces of gold worth in "cash".

I don't hold any "real" amount of money in the bank. We have seen one bank run (Rock in the UK). I doubt it'll be the last.

Lets say you do stash a bunch of cash in a footlocker thats buried under your outhouse. So the treasury department comes up and changes the bill couple of times. Can you go to the bank several years later and present them with such an "Aged" relic? Or will they just turn you away?

about 9 years ago I was planning on moving to FLA to join up with my old drummer and I rented a room for 200 a month, mostly road my bicycle around. Only items was insurance, food and rent. I allowed myself to spend only 25-50 a week. This included gas...at the time I worked about 8 miles away. In 7 months I accumulated about 15,000 dollars.

Got to FLA
Friend had turned to oxycotten, vicaden, herion, cocain and alcohol.

I spent my money trying tosave his pizza place, and house. took off three months later with 10,000 in cash.

Came back home, an ex had been taking care of my father (long story)
Bought a house so my dad had a place to ive till he died (stroke, anuerism, TBI (wiped out on a moped, coma at Yale for 4 months, rehabed at Gaylord for 6 months)
Spent my 10,000 for down payment ect. Caught her three months later ridding some guy, went head first into a depression, lost the house and her and my ten grand.

Just recently starting to recover, supposed to have three months of bills etc. in cash, have a family of 6 (including myself)

So no I have no stash of cash anymore.

keeping very little (relatively speaking to my recurring bills) in FRN's. There are so many tangible things that I figure are needed in case of an outage of work, or modern utilities from whatever type of crisis may come. I am buying water containers, water filters, canned goods, propane, hiking/camping gear, ammo, guns. I'm not stopping until I feel like I could stay in my house for 6 months and want for nothing. Then I will go back to buying shiny yellow metal.

so for those with larger cash positions...

do you store 100s ...or 20s

Orrrrrrrrr.....2 tons of pennies :)

its my perception that 100s are more suseptable to counterfiting thus might be harder to use in shtf situations.

thoughts anyone?

"Old" FRNs would be of more use in the outhouse.

When governments issue replacement cash, they usually give a very short advance notice and a very short conversion time - such as a week or so - to turn in your stash, explain just why you have so much of it, and get the new bills. That's another chance for them to flush out the non-taxed and unexplained cash in your stash. After the exchange period, the old bills are worthless. :bawling:

Those of us here in hurricane country learned that if you do have an emergency stash, to keep it in small bills, 20 or less. Not so much due to counterfeiting, (actually, I saw more bogus $20s during my time in retail than anything else), but due to the change aspect. Any place that is open, especially for stuff like gas, won't have the change for large bills (you ever try to use a large bill even when TS has not HTF?)

Same argument for having silver and/or fractional gold instead of just 1 oz. gold ingots/coins for WTSHTF. Folks won't be able or willing to give you change (or as much as you'd expect back).

Anyway, that's what I'd do if I actually had any cash, silver, or gold....

I know last year when we had two consecutive Ice storms etc.....you had to have cash to purchase essentials like Fuel and Food.....the convience stores didnt take Silver or Gold...the ATMs were not working....so at least in my case i survived on FRNs i had on hand for the 2-3wks everything was down.

I dont think anyone is "hoarding" FRNs just wondering how much in hand cash would be needed during a transitional phase of SHTF or a Extended Bank Holiday

Just as LARs posted above there are times when FRNs are needed

I prefer to keep only a small amount of FRN if any. Us dollars are much safer IMHO. I prefer to keep emergency cash in dollars not FRN's.

From what I understand US Dollars are lawful money and outside of the Federal Reserve private credit system. Lawful money is money issued by the United States Treasury.

I again am confused by your post....the thread is about emergency CASH

I posted about Emergency Cash

Going back to my post you responded to.....in a ICE or Hurricane storm emergency to buy gas at the local service station what form of money are you saving to use in that senerio

I know they WONT take silver(they didnt in the last ice storm we had)
I know they WONT take CCs (all the machines were down)
I do know they Took...Green Cash FRNs
I didnt try but i imagine they would take Coin change if forced to
I imagine they would take Silver Certificates

When you say you dont have FRNs for that type of problem but your saving CASH...what the heck are you talking about...what is YOUR definition of Cash if it is somethign other than FRNs

This is why you want to keep bank receipts for all cash, to prove it is yours legally.

By cash I am talking about US coinage not silver coins but everyday coinage circulated today. It is a little more inconvenient then paper, but I view it as safer then the FRN private credit system that is falling apart today.

I assume, but may be wrong in doing so, that the dollar coins issued by the US Treasury are not part of the Federal Reserve System. Nickels, and pennies would be the safer forms of cash but not as practical as the new dollar coins or 1/2's. I do keep some small amounts of FRN's as well but I don't like holding too much private credit paper.
